McGrath Announces Candidacy

Will Seek Re-Election as Attorney General in 2004 Election

(Helena) In front of a standing room only crowd of supporters in the Montana State Capitol, Attorney General Mike McGrath today announced his candidacy for re-election.

"Today I am announcing that I am a candidate for re-election as Montana’s Attorney General," said McGrath who was first elected Attorney General in 2000.

"Being Attorney General has given me an opportunity to use my skills and training as a lawyer on behalf of the people of Montana. It is a position that I truly love and I’m proud that my office has made a positive difference for our state," said McGrath.

McGrath earned a degree in business administration from the University of Montana in 1970 and he graduated from the Gonzaga University Law School in 1975. He was also a Reginald Heber Smith Community Lawyer fellow in Reno, Nevada, providing legal services to low-income clients. McGrath is a veteran of the United States Air Force. Prior to being elected Attorney General in 2000, McGrath served as Lewis and Clark County Attorney for 18 years.

McGrath is currently chair of the Conference of Western Attorneys General (CWAG) and is a criminal law co-chair for the National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG).

In his announcement speech, McGrath noted the progress his office has made in the areas of criminal justice, victim services, consumer protection and streamlining regulatory services.

"There is much to do in the coming years. Many of the projects I have outlined have just begun. I want the opportunity to see these completed. I want the opportunity to continue to serve the people of Montana as Attorney General. I hope the voters of this great state will give me that opportunity," McGrath concluded.
